Dirkjan van Groningen
Dirkjan was born in Kampen, The Netherlands in 1971. He was exposed to percussion when he was about 8 years old and started lessons with percussion instructor Gerrit Olsman, at the local band A.M.D.G. During high school he played in several well know Dutch show bands, drum corps percussion ensembles and orchestras.
In 1993 Dirkjan became a member of the “Dutch Boy Drum & Bugle Corps” from Canada and competed in the American Drum & Bugle Corps competition. At the same time, he started studying at the conservatory in Zwolle under Peter Prommel, Jan Wissink and Peter Berk. In 1998 he earned his degree in Classical Percussion. One year later he also graduated in Jazz and Pop Music.
Currrently Dirkjan is teaching percussion at several music schools and bands. He is a well established performer and travels through Europe as a marching specialist and supports the Percussion Ensembles of Drumcorps as clinician, arranger and instructor. In addition, he frequently and enthusiastically holds workshops for (marching) percussion ensembles and for field drums and pit percussion ensembles.
As a drummer he is ocassionally active is several bands. Dirkjan is the author of the popular snare drum “basics method books” and the founder and president of Show & Marching Music Company.
