David van der Heide
David is a technical drummer who is a playing member of the Pasveercorps Leeuwarden snare line and he also teaches snares for the world famous Pasveercorps Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.
In 1990 David was born in his hometown Heerenveen. On the age of 2 years, he moved to the city of Leeuwarden, where he started drumming at the age of 4 at the ‘Slagwerkschool Leeuwarden’ owned by Peter Vulperhorst. After 4 years of drumming and performing (at events such as Queensday, for example), he began as an apprentice at the Youth Corps Pasveer (now Young Pasveer). At that time David was 8 years old.
When the 2.5-year long apprentice training was completed, David ascended to the Youth Corps Pasveer / Young Pasveer where he became part of the snare line. During his first year, Young Pasveer won the title of world champion in the Star Division of the World Music Contest in 2001. David was 11 years old at that time.
When he was 13 years old he had a strong interest in the Drum Corps world. Since that time he has developed a technique and style of playing in both traditional marching style and Drum Corps style. The Drum Corps technique improvements were ones that he taught to himself. Both of these styles have now become his specialty.
After four years of playing at Young Pasveer, David —who at age 14 was the youngest ever transferred playing member— moved up to the Pasveercorps where he was under the direction of Peter Vulperhorst again, and successfully! In that year (2005) Pasveercorps won the title of World Champion Marching parade in de World Class division at the World Music Contest.
At the age of 16, David became the assistant percussion instructor at Young Pasveer where he now teaches the percussion ensemble together with Bas Hut. David creates new percussion pieces played by Young Pasveer as well.
Starting in 2011 he will be the new instructor for snares at Pasveercorps. David assures that the snare line will improve significantly in technique and that perfection is his main goal. "You cannot make a good tomato soup using rotten tomatoes,” he says, emphasizing that you cannot play a piece perfectly when the underlying technique and patterns are not controlled and/or understood.
David has now developed himself into a specialist on the snare drum in traditional marching style and drum corps style. Recently he plays on the extreme tension snare drum XTD XXC1412S from Majestic and soon there will be a demo video available from David on our Multimedia page.
