Steve Crawford
Whether it is a symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, percussion ensemble, jazz ensemble, opera/music theatre orchestra, or world and ethnic music, Dr. Stephen Crawford brings his thirty-plus years of percussion performance to these varying ensembles.
His love and enthusiasm for music, his interests in the advancement of the artss, and
the education of musicians of all ages keeps him in demand as a performer, conductor,
clinician, and lecturer, with appearance throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico,
and Ireland.
Dr. Crawford is currently an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental
Studies at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. He received a Bachelor
of Arts degree in Music Education from Minot State University, a Master of Music degree
from the University of Northern Iowa, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University
of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
Dr. Crawford began his teaching career with the Edmore Public Schools in North Dakota.
He has held teaching and conducting positions Temple College, Minot State University,
Ellsworth College, the University of Northern Iowa, and was the Associate Conductor with
the Kansas City Civic Orchestra. Currently, he is the principal percussionist and timpanist
with the Temple Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Ritmo y Mas Percussion Group,
and conductor of the UMHB Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, and Percussion Ensemble.
Dr. Crawford percussion performance career has allowed him the opportunity to accompany
such notable musicians as Allen Vizzuti, Kevin Mohagany, Gary Foster, Frank Mantooth,
Ernie Watts, Ron Wilkens, Ashley Alexander, Steve Wright, Gordon MacRae, John Browning,
The Kingston Trio, and the Kings Singers.
His orchestral career has spanned over twenty-five years as he has performed as a percussionist
with the Minot, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Dubuque, Lawrence, Kansas City Civic, Waco, and
Temple Symphony Orchestras.
As host of the annual Percussion Days at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, he has
brought to the school performers such as John Mark Piper, Nexus, Leigh Howard Stevens,
Marty Hurley, Dave Samuels, David Friedman, and Ney Rosauro.
A nationally recognized conductor and scholar of wind and percussion music, Dr. Crawford
has conducted performances at state, national and international conferences including
the TMEA conference, College Band Director's National Conference, The Percussive Arts
Society's International Conference, and the International Horn Symposium. He has presented
lectures/clinics at the Music Education Associations of Indiana, Kentucky, Nebraska,
Pennsylvania, North Dakota, South Carolina, California, New Mexico, and Minnesota.
Dr. Crawford is the author of "Building a Better Percussion Section." His compositions include Ghost River, Winter Mix, From the Edge of the Frame, for solo marimba, Remembering Tomorrow: Impressions on Japanese Wind Chimes, for flute and marimba, and Chroma I for marimba quartet. These compositions are published through HoneyRock Publishing Company. Both Ghost River and From the Edge of the Frame are presently on the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List.
